Intro to types of services

Hudson Job Search (HJS) is a volunteer organization dedicated to assisting men and women in the process of learning essential job skills during their career transition. All who are interested in the job search process are welcome to join in the HJS Monday night job search meetings. These meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7:30pm at Christ Church Episcopal in Hudson.
In addition to the Monday night meetings, those eligible for additional assistance can receive one-on-one services from a volunteer HJS Advisor including:

  • Personalized Self Assessment
  • Resume Preparation
  • Organizing Your Job Search
  • Answering Job Postings
  • Targeting Your Job Campaign
  • Interviewing Skills
  • Researching Potential Employers Negotiating Compensation
  • Professional Networking
  • Closing on a Job Offer

Due to limited resources and volunteer hours, one-on-one advising is limited to those living or worshipping in Hudson.
Although many communities provide some facilities for their job seekers to meet together, it is believed that HJS is unique nationally in its volunteer advising, as well as the dedication of the assigned advisor who works closely with the job seeker until a new position is found.

Role of Advisor

Trained volunteer advisors provide coaching on a one-on-one basis until the client obtains employment, regardless of the time taken to achieve this objective. Advisors bring a great deal of experience to the job search mission of HJS. Some of whom serve on the HJS Board of Trustees and other functions within the organization. The number of advisors usually totals around 50.

Advisors meet as a group two times per month, in addition to dedicating time with their client(s). Advisors also work with other advisors to set up practice (mock) interviews for their clients. These sessions allow for analysis and discussion with the client after the practice interview and each session is DVD recorded for the client’s personal review.

Role of Client

In order for the HJS advisor/client relationship to work successfully, there has to be a commitment by both parties. An HJS advisor does not find their client a job…they help the client with all the tactical and attitudinal behaviors necessary to be successful in today’s job seeking environment.

Job seeking should be treated as full time job!! The benefit of this is that the time-till-the¬ next-position can be shortened, sometimes dramatically, by doing the “right things the right way” on a full time basis.

The purpose of the “JumpStarting the Job Search Process” client binder is to identify the processes that a job seeker should learn and then implement the key aspects of job seeking in an organized, somewhat time-bound way. As a client undertakes this process, it is important to keep in touch with their advisor, ideally through face to face meetings or weekly phone conversations.

Every client’s situation is different, as are the job seeking skills entering into their search. Identifying those areas needing attention (e.g.: networking, resume creation, deciding on a job search area of focus, interviewing skills) is critical to getting back to work as soon as possible.

Always remember that the HJS advisors and staff are volunteering their time to help you the client find your ideal position. The entire organization exists to meet this critical need. We are not perfect, but we will do our best to help you meet your objectives during your time of need.
